CRA is expanding SimpleFile phone filing for low-income individuals

Telephone on a desk

CRA has just announced it is expanding its SimpleFile by Phone service. SimpleFile by Phone is an automated phone service making it quick and easy to file your taxes. With SimpleFile by Phone, you can complete your tax return in as little as 10 minutes, from your home, at a time that works for you.

If invited to SimpleFile by Phone, you will need to to confirm some personal information and then answer a series of short questions. There are no forms to fill out or calculations to do. When your return has been processed, you will receive a notice of assessment either in the mail or in your My Account.

Note: SimpleFile by Phone is an invitation-only service. If you are eligible, CRA will invite you by mail, or by email (if you have the option receive emails is selected in your My Account).

Starting this summer, CRA will also pilot SimpleFile digital and paper options. These new services will target lower-income individuals who do not file their tax returns or who have a gap in their filing history, and therefore are not receiving the benefit and credit payments they could be entitled to.

According to CRA, more than 1.5 million individuals, double the number from last year, have been invited to automatically complete and submit their tax returns in 2024.

Find out more about the program on the CRA website.
