Free small business support from CRA liaison officers
Dealing with the Canada Revenue Agency can be overwhelming for small business owners. In my role as bookkeeper, I often help my clients navigate the bureaucracy of the CRA and understand their tax obligations.
But did you know that CRA actually offers free support to small business owners with their liaison officer service?
Across Canada, there are approximately 180 CRA liaison officers, and since 2014, more than 94,000 small businesses have benefited from the free service.
What do liaison officers help with?
Liaison officers meet with you to:
- help you understand your tax obligations and possible business deductions
- explain general bookkeeping concepts and best practices, and if you’re having a personalized visit, the officer will provide recommendations on how to improve your bookkeeping systems
- explain how to avoid common tax errors
- give you an overview of CRA’s online tools and electronic services
- answer your tax-related questions
- show you how to compare your business revenues and expenses with others in the same industry
And if you are nervous about inviting the tax man over for tea, don’t worry. Liaison officer visits are confidential, and your information will not be shared with any other areas of the CRA.
How to access the liaison officer service
Book your free liaison officer visit on the CRA site, where you can:
- Request a visit in person, by phone or online
- Organize an in-person seminar or online webinar for your association or group
If you have had a visit with a CRA liaison officer, I would love to hear how that went for you. Feel free to send me a message or post a comment below.
